Fort Nelson First Nation: Who We Are

The Fort Nelson First Nation (FNFN) community is located 7 kilometers south of the town of Fort Nelson in the northeastern corner of British Columbia. The main community is located at Mile 293-295 on the Alaska Highway.  While the Original inhabitants were Dene, the Nation is now made up of Dene and Cree linguistic groups with roughly 850 band members living on and off-reserve. It is one of eight nations that belong to Treaty 8 in Northeast British Columbia.

We envision a future when our community works together to care for our land, air and water. We envision our community taking a central role in land and resource management in our territory and we strive for responsible development in our land, where balance is once again found between our traditional cultural values and economic use of the land and resources. Today the Fort Nelson First Nation upholds the spirit and intent of our treaty by asserting our rights to our land and taking responsibility to ensure that our future generations are able to live their lives in our lands in a way that honors our ancestors.
